Membership Luncheon
Thursday, April 24th
11:30am - 1:00pm
Edmonds Yacht Club
sponsored by
Climate Protection
Committee
In the summer of
2006, Mayor Haakenson formed the Citizens Committee on U.S. Mayors
Climate Protection Agreement (commonly referred to as the Climate
Protection
Committee), in order to involve citizens and staff to find ways
Edmonds can help reduce
global warming. Currently, five citizens and eight staff form the
committee. The committee meetings are open to the public and are
generally held on the first Thursday of each month.
The
Committee’s Mission is to:
1. Encourage citizens to be a part of the solution
2. Encourage City staff and citizens to conserve current resources
3. Work with the City Council to implement ideas
4. Address effectively the future impacts of climate change.
The Committee is involved in several projects, some of which are: an
energy-reduction program for local business owners, data collection of
greenhouse-gas emissions for City operations (eventually GHG data will
be collected communitywide), and a low-impact
development program to promote “green” buildings. The committee is
also planning an environmental fair in September to increase awareness
and provide a fun way for families to learn more about sustainability.
You can find out more about what this committee is doing by attending
this month’s Membership Luncheon. Also checkout: Climate
Protection on the City’s website a
